Need help with a student access issue?
Contact the Course Materials team or visit the Course Materials desk inside the University Store.
How do students know which course materials they will need?+
Students can view required and optional course materials in either of these ways:
- Use the BYU-Idaho University Store textbook lookup at store.byui.edu/booklist/.
- Print a booklist at the University Store.
Faculty adoptions determine what appears on each student’s booklist.
How will students access their digital textbook?+
Digital textbooks are accessed through Canvas.
- For digital textbooks delivered through vitalsource, select Course Materials in the Canvas course menu.
- Other links or integrations throughout the Canvas course.
- McGraw Hill Connect courseware is accessed through the McGraw Hill Connect link in the Canvas course menu, not through Course Materials.
When and how will students be charged for digital textbooks?+
Digital textbook charges are applied directly to the student’s BYU-Idaho financial account, similar to tuition and fees. Students have access on the first day of class, and charges appear during the first week of classes.
When a student drops the class or opts out of a digital textbook, the refund generally appears three to five business days after the transaction.
How long do students have to opt out of a digital textbook?+
Students may opt out of some Auto Access digital materials during the first four weeks of the semester.
- Opt-out instructions are provided in Canvas and University Store communications.
- Reminder emails are sent on the first day of class and before the deadline.
- A confirmation email is sent after a successful opt out.
- If an error occurs, students should email universitystoresupport@byui.edu or visit the Course Materials desk.
- After the opt out deadline, access and charges are finalized. Students may not opt out before the "W" date.
How do I know whether the correct textbook was adopted for my course?+
- Before adoptions are due, send the correct adoption information to the office manager or add the correct materials into Verba Collect.
- The University Store sends an adoption confirmation email after materials are submitted.
- Review the listed materials. If everything is correct, no action is required.
- If something is incorrect, contact your Office Manager or the Course Materials team.
- Before the semester begins, check the Course Materials link in Canvas to view digital materials.
- Changes cannot be made after the adoption deadline.
I decided to change textbooks. How do I remove the original item from my adoption?+
The University understands that class and section assignments can change and will do its best to accommodate updates.
Before the adoption deadline
Contact your Office Manager or the Course Materials team immediately to update the adoption.
After the adoption deadline
The change needs to occur through the Course Materials Manager. If physical books have already been purchased, shipping charges may be billed to the department.
My students cannot see their digital textbooks in Canvas. What should I do?+
First confirm that Course Materials is enabled in your Canvas course navigation. Refer to the pairing instructions for setup steps.
If the issue continues:
- Contact the Course Materials Manager immediately.
- The problem may involve the delivery method, distribution rights, or an incorrect setup.
Can I scan a textbook and give the PDF to my students?+
No. Scanning and distributing textbook content without permission violates copyright law.
Educational fair use may apply to limited materials used for classroom instruction, assignments, presentations, or research. Examples may include a single chapter for discussion, an individual journal article used in a lecture, or limited images and media clips used to illustrate a concept.
Do I have to use the University Store, or can I send students to purchase materials directly?+
Course materials should be adopted through the University Store because this:
- Supports accurate pricing and availability.
- Allows the Store to determine Auto Access eligibility.
- Supports first-day digital access and Canvas integration.
- Helps ensure equal access for students.
- Allows students to use FAFSA and scholarship funds for eligible purchases.
Sending students to third-party vendors can create access inequities and prevent digital integration.
I updated a course packet printed by the BYU-Idaho Print Services. How do I adopt the new edition?+
- Tell your Department Office Manager as soon as possible when submitting adoptions.
- Contact the Print Services and submit the updated PDF for proofing before the adoption deadline.
- Each updated packet requires a new adoption and ISBN.
- Plan around enrollment numbers and required printing time.
- Course packets must be printed and received at the University Store at least one week before move-in day to support Student Express distribution.
- All prints are due on the same deadline as the adoption due dates.
I want to create a kit containing supplies for my course. Who should I contact?+
Contact University Store Supplies Buyer Regina Hansen at hansenr@byui.edu.
Work together to determine:
- Kit contents
- Pricing
- Packaging and availability
Kits must be included in the course adoption and identified as Required or Optional.
I have used the same textbook for years. Why does the price of used books keep increasing?+
Used textbook prices may increase because of:
- Reduced or discontinued publisher supply of new print books.
- Fewer copies of older editions being resold.
- Higher shipping and sourcing costs.
- Publishers shifting toward digital-first products or courseware.
Whenever possible, the University Store prioritizes used copies to keep student costs as low as possible.
Still have a course-materials question?
Contact your Office Manager or the Course Materials team before the adoption deadline so questions can be resolved before materials are purchased or digital access is finalized.
